Relationships with students are a critical aspect of providing students with a safe space. It may be past or presently occurring trauma and knowing a teacher is on their side can make a world of difference to the student.

It emphasizes the importance of students having lots of support, care and trust with the adults in their classrooms. The Effectiveness of Training and Supervising Urban Elementary School Teachers in Child–Teacher Relationship Training
This article explores the use of Child-Teacher Relationship Training (CTRT) and the impact of CTRT on the teacher's perception of students' behaviours and student-teacher stress. Within the study, teachers received 22 weeks of CTRT training and completed assessments that tracked their stress levels due to child behaviors. As teachers debriefed each week, it provided insight into the effects of this training on teacher experiences. From this, teachers reported a decrease in teacher-student stress, a greater understanding of child behaviors, and the opportunity to actively reflect on their own understanding/perception of the experience.

Community Circles: Mitigating the impact of trauma on the middle school student
In this article there is a discussion of the benefits of using community circles in the classroom to allow students to share, feel safe and empowered. It recommends creating an open space where students are given the opportunity to connect and feel compassion for one another. This allows for students to find solutions naturally.

COECT Therapeutic Parenting Podcast
This podcast is created by the Centre of Excellence in Child Trauma and is meant for struggling parents or caregivers.
Educators are caregivers for a major portion of children's days and so this podcast can provide potential strategies for you as caregivers. It provides another perspective that educators should keep in mind of what parents may be experiencing at home. It provides "in-depth conversations with the COECT professionals and other experts" to help parents with understanding and discussing the potential problems they face. |
